Parallel Magazine editor’s note “Constantly Becoming”

By  |

Change is inevitable. In matters big or small, it is the only thing constant in life. Parallel Magazine is gratified to celebrate our one-year anniversary issue! We can’t believe the journey started a year ago. It is amazing how time flies. What is an anniversary without a celebration? As we celebrate our anniversary, the journey hasn’t always been easy. We’ve had some trial and tribulations along the way but we are grateful for all the success and support we’ve received.

In the process of putting together this issue, we wanted to explore not just music but also fashion and art. We were committed to staying true to our vision of what Parallel Magazine represents, which is celebrating and highlighting innovative individuals that contribute to the growth in the continent of Africa as a whole. While creating our celebratory issue, we thought of things that unite us as Africans, things that bring us together as one. The only thing that stands out is Music!

Music has traditionally played an imperative role in the African culture and diaspora. It is indispensable in representing the strong African heritage and its importance can be seen in many aspects of the culture.  Unlike many cultures today, ancient African cultures comprised music into their everyday lives. Storytelling, dance, and religious practices are all grounded in the music of the culture.

Very few international celebrities have been adaptable to our dynamic cultural scenery than the star of our new special edition issue, Tiwa Savage. Tiwa Savage is a prevalent household name not just in the Nigerian music industry, but also in the continent of Africa. She has accomplished so much in just a few years than most artists could in a career. Her distinctiveness and innate ingenuity have broadened the artistic range of the Afro-pop and R&B genres, which is why she is the fitting subject for our new special edition issue. Inside this issue, Tiwa discusses life as an artist, the balance between artistry, motherhood, views on her craft & its impact, what singing means to her and why she is ‘Constantly Becoming’.
